ROBO 3D R1 3D Printer (full review)
Weighing in at 26 pounds, this printer is just over 18 inches tall, 22 inches wide and 15 inches deep. It can build objects measuring a maximum of 8” x 9” x 10” inches. The layer resolution of the prints are 100 microns maximum, and the format of the file loaded can be either .OBJ or .STL. The software for this printer is included, although it can also be used with open source software as well.
One standout feature when compared to the Printrbot, is that you can print your designs using many different types of 1.75 mm filaments. The compatible types include PLA, ABS, Nylon, WPC, HIPS and PC. When you print your object, the ROBO 3D R1 offers a speed range between 40 and 200 mm per second.
Printrbot Metal Simple 3D Printer (full review)
The Printrbot is a more compact 3D printer than the Robo 3D, measuring 15 inches tall, 11 inches wide and 12.5 inches deep. As a result of its smaller size, it weighs only 12 pounds and has maximum build dimensions of 6” x 6” x 6”. When printing, the maximum layer resolution is also 100 microns. This printer is open source as far as software goes, but Slic3r and Repetier-host are recommended.
When it comes to the filaments, the Printrbot works exclusively with PLA filament, which is sold separately. This may be restricting when compared to the various choices available with the Robo 3D. Now let’s compare the build and connections of the two.
Construction and Connectivity
The Robo 3D R1 comes conveniently fully assembled. It contains a partially opened frame to allow for a bigger build, and heated plates which prevent warping from uneven cooling of the filaments. The exterior is made of plastic, making it light weight, but also causing it to be more fragile than the Printrbot.
To connect, this printer does so via micro USB or micro SD card and is compatible with Mac and Windows operating systems.
The Printrbot Metal differs from the Robo 3D R1, as its frame is constructed entirely of steel and aluminum, versus plastic. It also has a finish of black powder-coat for additional protection. This makes the Printrbot quieter during printing, more durable and sleek looking. The bed in this printer is also warp resistant and has a semi-auto leveling probe to ensure the printing surface that is level.
One last addition was a new aluminum pulley system, which gives the Printrbot clean prints without slipping from reverse motion. When it comes to connections and compatibility, this printer also connects via micro USB and SD card, but supports Linux in addition to Mac and Windows.

If the features you are looking for in a 3D printer are durability, a sleek style and a compact design, the Printrbot is a great choice. However, if you are looking to print larger objects and want a variety of filaments to choose from, while not minding the plastic build, the Robo 3D R1 will be the best choice.
